About Trauma & Fracture Injuries

While most people are familiar with broken bones, “fractures” actually come in many different forms. For example, whether a bone is merely cracked or fully broken will help determine the type of treatment applied. In addition, the direction of the break will determine the type of fracture.

According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, common types of fractures include:

  • Closed fractures – Fractures where the bones stay within the body
  • Open fractures – Wounds where the bone is exposed or the fracture breaks the skin
  • Comminuted fractures – Fractures that shatter the bone into 3 pieces or more
  • Transverse fractures – Fractures that travel horizontally across the bone
  • Oblique fractures – Angular fractures
