Arthroscopic Meniscus Surgery
Minimally-Invasive Options for Knee Repair
The meniscus is a small piece of cartilage that houses the knee. It provides
a cushion between the femur and the tibia, acting as a shock absorber
for the body. The meniscus can tear from traumatic impact, such as in
sports, or from overuse and grinding, like with arthritis.
When the meniscus tears, an arthroscopic surgeon can repair or cut away
from the meniscus—without using large incisions. Arthroscopic knee
repair is a fairly recent innovation that uses small incisions and tools
called “arthroscopes.” This procedure often results in less
painful or invasive surgery, and some patients are able to go home the same day.
