Ligament Reconstruction Surgery
Ankle & Foot Specialists in South Florida
The ankle joint is composed of three primary bones: the tibia, the fibula,
and the talus. They are bound to each other through ligaments. Ligaments
allow the bones to move against each other with stability by holding them
in place. When the ankle is sprained or overstretched, the ligaments are
damaged. When rehabilitation or therapy does not cause the ligaments to
self-heal, surgery is necessary.
Usually, the surgeon will stitch the torn ligament together, or reattach
it to the bones through anchor implants. Sometimes, surgeons use healthy
tendons and graft them onto the bones if the ligaments are too severely
damaged. In any case, surgery provides permanent stability and relief
to damaged ligaments.
